Todd - wanted to check and see if there are any concerns with Yulelog and Vista compatibility. I've just gotten a new PC and would like to move my collection to the new faster system. However I also plan to upgrade the new PC to Vista, so want to make sure no problems before I make the effort. I'm keeping my old system and it will continue to run Win XP (have to have my iTunes!), so if you advise to leave on the old system I can do that.

Yes, YuleLog works on Vista but there is a subtle difference.

YuleLog must be installed in the Documents folder on Vista Machines instead of the normal Program Files Folder. The 2008 version has been tweaked to deal with this better, so before installing on Vista, be sure you have the 2008 version.

When you get to the screen that asks where you want to install, click on the Browse button.
Select Users.
Then Select your login directory (could be your name) It is whatever name you use to sign in to your computer.
Select Documents.
Click continue and this should install YuleLog in your Documents folder.

Vista can be so much fun!

If you are using Vista and you have been using YuleLog with the program installed in the Program Files folder, it appears to work but Vista will not allow
YuleLog to save changes or create files within the Program Files
folder. It actually creates a hidden folder, where these changes
occur. So, if you go to the Program Files folder, expecting to see
your backup files or upgrade to the latest version, it won't work.

You need to do the following things to fix this. It looks complicated,
but if you carefully follow each step, it's not that bad. Each of
these steps are covered in detail as you read further

1. First you install YuleLog in the Documents folder but don't run it yet.
2. You need to go to this hidden folder and copy your backup files
to a safe place, like another hard drive or a USB Flash Drive.
3. Then copy the backup files from the hidden folder to the
YuleLog2 folder in the Documents folder.
4. You then need to delete the program from the hidden folder and
from the Program Files folder.
5. Then Restore your data using the backup files

Before you begin, assuming YuleLog has been working and you have added
data, start YuleLog, and then quit the program and when it asks, tell
it Yes, that you want to save backup files. They will be saved in the
hidden folder.

Using your newest CD, run the YuleLog Install as if it were a first
time install:

* Insert your newest CD.
* When asked select Show Files to open the CD. (or if it doesn't ask, open the CD using My Computer)
* Double click on Install.
* If asked, tell the installer that this is a New install.
* When you get to the screen that asks where you want to install, click on the Browse button.
* Double Click on Users.
* Double Click on the user name that you use to login.
* Double Click on Documents.
* Click continue and this should install YuleLog in your Documents folder in a folder named YuleLog2.
* When the install process is finished, eject the CD.

To show the hidden files:

* Click on the Windows logo at the bottom left of the screen and select Control Panel
* Double Click on Folder Options
* Select the View tab.
* Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
* Close the Folder Options Window.

To get your backup files it is best to save them to a Flash Drive.
Click here to learn more about Flash Drives. http://www.yulelog.com/USB.htm
Use your browser's back button to return.:

* Open My Computer
* Double-Click on your C: Drive
* Double-Click on Users
* Double-Click on the user name that you use to login. (IMPORTANT)
* Double-Click on AppData
* Double-Click on Local
* Double-Click on VirtualStore
* Double-Click on Program Files
* Double-Click on YuleLog2
* There you should find the backup files. (backup1, backup2, and backup3)
* For safe keeping, copy the three backup files (backup1.fp3, backup2.fp3, and backup3.fp3) to a flash drive (preferred) or another hard drive.
o Hold down the shift key and left click on each of the three backup files to select them and then release the shift key.
o Carefully, right click on any of the three selected files and from the popup menu select Copy.
o Close My Computer
o Open My Computer
o Double Click on your Flash Drive.
o Right-click within the Flash Drive window, then select Paste.
* Paste the backup files into the new YuleLog 2 folder which is in the Doucments folder.
o Close My Computer
o Open My Computer
o Double Click on your C: Drive.
o Double Click on Users.
o Double-Click on the user name that you use to login.
o Double Click on Documents.
o Double Click on YuleLog2
o Right-click within the YuleLog2 window, then select Paste.
o Close My Computer

Delete the hidden files:

* Double Click on My Computer
* Double Click on Local Drive C
* Double click on Users
* Double-Click on the user name that you use to login.
* Double Click on appdata
* Double Click on Local
* Double click on Virtualstore
* Double Click on Program Files
* Right Click on YuleLog2 and select delete.
* Answer yes to all the questions indicating that you want to delete.
* Close My Computer
* Right click on your Recycle Bin and tell it to empty.

Delete YuleLog from the Program Files Folder:

* Double click on My Computer
* Double click on Local Drive C:
* Double click on Program Files
* Right click on YuleLog2 and select "Delete"
* Answer yes to all the questions indicating that you want to delete.
* Close My Computer
* Right click on your Recycle Bin and tell it to empty.

Restore your data using the Backup Files

* Start YuleLog, again answering the question as if this were a first time installation.
* Fill out the name and address form and then at the Licensed to screen,
* Click on the Utilities button.
* Click on the Restore From Back Up Data Files button.
* This will read your data from the backup files into the new copy of YuleLog and then you should be good to go.
