I did a postcard exchange with other GS around the world with my oldest daughter's troop a few years ago. The girls had a great time with it.

Do you collect the patches on the back of the different camps or the Service Unit numbers? What a fun idea.

I have three girls in scouts and have been an asst and leader to two of the troops.

(See, I pretended the Icon is for G.S.!)

Dee asked "what are the rings you collect Mary L?"

Dee,
The rings are all Girl Scout - some adjustable and assorted sized ones - gold and silver - some with stones on top and others with trefoil or the Girl Scout emblem.
I have 10 different Brownie ones that are different styles. One is gold with red/orange stone and brownie elf on sides.
11 Girls Scouts emblem rings that are different. Two different style Cadette.
7 Rings in original boxes.
Another 11 of different styles on top, plus duplicates of rings above.
Two of my favorites are a 10K Gold with GS on top and a 2 on one side of the GS on top with a 3 on other size. I'm guessing that the 23 is for the troop number or year. The other favorite is dome style with sterling silver base and 10K gold GS emblem on top of siver.
I love Scouts - helped with daughters troop for years and then was a G.S. trainer for council.

Suzy, Mary & Dee, Just this summer we went to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts "Our Chalet" over in Switzerland while on a big family vacation (all 16 of us~!). It was BEAUTIFUL. IF I had known y'all were fond of Girl Scout stuff, I would have definitely brought you each back a patch or something. My husband's Mother was a big fan of the GS and did both daughter's troops and Steve's Cub Scout troop and now one daughter and her daughter are keeping up the tradition.

Check out the VOLUNTEER page, some pretty sweet benefits, days off would be like Heaven on Earth~!!!

Thanks, Deanna. I'll have to keep this in mind for my oldest daughter. It will be awhile before she is old enough, but time goes by fast!

Dee, I think it would be an excellent life experience either before, during or after college. And you are so right, time is flying by too fast for me, just dropped Steven off for third grade, I think I was expecting him when I started reading YuleLog message board(s), and Sarah is off to sixth grade. Call me crazy . . . but I'm kinda sad school started TODAY~!!!

I'm a Barbie miniaturist which means I collect funiture and accessories for my Barbie dollhouse. Lots of the Hallmark ornaments are just perfect for this especially the miniatures. For example, I put the Old English Village on the mantle so Barbie can have a Dept 56 village and it looks perfect. I use the Nostalgic Houses and Shops as dollhouses for Kelly. She gets a new one every year, etc.

Qwackertoo, thanks for the Our Chalet website. I'm going to look into it.

Slukster, loved looking at your pictures. You have a wonderful collection.

Loaded Question! My #1 collection is Vintage Jewelry; I have gobs and gobs. I also collect Hallmark ornaments (obviously), smoking paraphrenalia, vintage purses, Herend figurines, some Beanies and Ty plush and stuffed animals in general, vintage hats, and various misc. antiques. A conversation piece collection that my boyfriend and I share is the collection of Buddhas and Poodles that started quite by accident at an auction. We bid on several box lots and at the bottom of one of the boxes was a poodle and a buddha. We thought they were cute but did not think much about it. At the next auction we went to...same thing. OK...weird! So...we started buying poodles and buddhas and have 2 shelves full.

I agree, this is a great topic!
In addition to Hallmark ornaments I also collect:

Magnets, Coffee Mugs and Keychains

Postcards and Antique Postcards

Antique Photos and Photo Albums

Flamingos

Vases

Other Christmas items-especially Nativity Sets

Cookbooks (did not realize I had this collection until I went through all my books)

And apparently craft items (I always find time to buy them but never seem to find the time to use them!)

And I probably have some other items that I can't recall at this time.

My Hallmark ornament collection also led me to collecting Hallmark lapel pins, magnets, and cookie cutters. I also have mangaged to put together the whole Hallmark Christmas music series to date(tapes and CDs) begun in 1985.
I also enjoy collecting The Reader's Digest World's Best Reading series. I have 52 books so far...by the way...these are unedited not condensed...wide variety of authors...Dickens, Twain, Austen, Steinbeck, Paseternack. I have some duplicates so if anyone out there also collects these and wants to trade, let me know
Also have a few silhouettes painted on convex glass.
And, count me in on Fenton glass, too..mostly what I can pick up at yard sales but once in a great while I treat myself to something at a collectible shop.

I don't collect Snowbabies, but I was tempted by the newest ones that I saw in the Dept. 56 magazine. They had quite a few with a gingerbread theme!

It's obvious that some people, no names mentioned, collect way too much stuff!
But not me!!! I only collect stuff that is cool or that I really have to have......

I doubt if anyone here collects antique thermostats. Ok, one of us does. I collect (buy and sell on Ebay) Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company thermostats that were manufactured from 1906 to 1927. After 1927 they merged with Honeywell. These are pretty cool (in the eyes of the collector). They are made of brass and are usually painted silver or bronze. They have a key-wind clock and are the forerunners of the modern day set-back thermostats. I recently sold one for $89 - not bad for a $15 investment.

Anyone else care to top that one in the way of weird things to collect?

Steve

Pigs - stuffed, crystal, wooden, ceramic, stone, pottery, brass - pigs of all shapes and sizes. My newest pig, Baby, came home from Chicago with me in June. All of my pigs have names!

Oh yeah, I collect a bit of Christmas stuff here and there.

I've delayed posting here, probably due to denial , but will now confess my other collections.

Other than anything with the name "Hallmark" on it, I collect
Old Hershey Tins,
Milk Glass that I like,
Old Little Golden Books,
Miscellaneous decks of cards,
Calendars (seems like I just can't throw one away at the end of the year)
Unusual western items (wagon wheels, pistol cuff links, old western magazines)
(I'm looking for a little pair of children's cowboy boots.)
Quilts
and Hallmark Pop-Up Books

Whewwww - there .... I feel better now.

State Quarters.
I acquired the Minnesota & Oregon quarters while in Brooklyn for the NYC hallmark show. I know I can go to the bank and get them as they are released every 10 weeks, but finding them in your change is much more fun and challenging.

Just missing California at the moment. Kansas should be released in a few weeks, and West Virginia by the end of 2005.

I've been waiting for someone else to say that they collect friends, but since no one else has I'll be the first.

I also collect things with double wedding ring quilt designs, red tulip designs (I will take some things that have other colors of tulips but the red ones are my favorites), cross stitch lapel pins, blonde jokes (even if it's not politically correct to tell them these days, I was blonde when I was little so I think I'm entitled to tell them) and counted cross stitch designs (I'm trying to make as many as I can in my lifetime, but I'm afraid I may qualify for the one with the most fabric & designs wins contest). I'm not quite as good at this as my husband is, but I also collect frequent flyer miles traveling between Kansas City and Indianapolis.

We won't even talk about white hairs or wrinkles since that's not really polite.

(edited to add the blonde jokes part; all the rest of it spilled out on my first attempt at writing this)
