I know they are out there but I have no idea where to buy them. Does anyone know?

Thanks, but never mind. I called the bank. Duh. There is a $3.95 service charge but the convenience and flexibility may be worth it.

I looked at Chase (my Visa) and didn't see anything but did on a Google with Bank of America and Bank USA. Try that link maybe there is somewhere near you that you can slip & slide over in the ice and buy in person.

I think the Visa gift cards have an activation fee no matter where you buy them from.

Thanks for a good laugh!

Even though there is a fee I think it's worth it just for the flexibility that kind of card allows the recipient--way better than a store card or restaurant card where they are locked in to one place.

Thanks for all the help, everyone!

You can also purchase them at grocery stores such as Safeway.

In theory the Visa cards are a nice gift and they do charge an activation fee. In reality, I think they are horrible. I received a Visa card as a gift and I have had more headaches with this thing than it's worth.

You need to activate the card, believe it or not, the Visa cards are not accepted every place that accepts Visa (read the fine print)...I don't think they will ring through at Hallmark for example. When you get down to a smaller balance than the item (for example, you purchase a $10 item but only have $8 on the Visa Card it won't ring the $8 through and reject it altogether). You would need to check your balance and tell the cashier to ring $8 through on the Visa card and pay the remainder...it isn't intuitive.

My father-in-law had the same problem when we gave him one as a gift one year prior to the one I received.

I'm pretty technology savvy so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing. Just a warning that they seem convenient but are big headaches if you ask me.

Thanks for the tips, bk. Never thought it through like that but what you say makes sense. I don't actually know anyone who has ever used a ppd Visa--but the TV ads sound good! ;-D I'm thinking we'll return to the Outback gift certs. Always popular!

If you are a AAA member, you can also get them at a AAA office.

To weigh in, I get them and use them all the time and love them! I guess it depends on where you are. I am in southern california and you can buy them at any grocery store, drug store, Target, Walmart etc and here using them is never a problem since they are very common. For me the fee is worth is as the recipient is not lock in to a specific store.

I have never had to activate. Maybe there are different types out there.

good luck!

I paid $3.50 a piece for mine at the bank (Wells Fargo, Phoenix, AZ). I noticed they had them at a Safeway grovery store for $4.95. I agree with the previous comments about not being tied to a specific store. All my nieces nad nephews (except one 4-yr old) got Visa cards this year. They want to choose their own gifts, be it clothes, music, or whatever.
